Let’s Treat Patients with More Dignity
One of the simplest yet profound lessons I learned early in my oncology career was how to refer to patients correctly. We should always say and write "patients with cancer," never "cancer patients." We cannot let a disease describe these individuals. They are “patients first” and foremost – quite literally. There are so many more vibrant attributes that capture the essence of a person.
